No problem, i'm new to Linux period, so bear that in mind.
There's an advanced section of that PDF that shows how to mount and access minirt24.gz. Once you've accessed it, you can then browse through everything in it.
I'm sure there are better ways of doing it or more specific tutorials out there on the web, I would encourage you to search for ways of modifying the minirt24.gz file.
As I said before, I know that will allow you to find and edit the linuxrc file that contains the ASCII "DSL". As far as the boot image, I haven't tried looking for it myself, so I couldn't tell you.
