This is driving me crazy, I need someone with a little more experience to explain what I'm doing wrong.......

By default, my home directory and a few other files should automatically backed up when I shutdown, correct? According to getting_started.html, these files/directories are listed in /home/dsl/.filetool.lst. I haven't modified that file as it already lists my home directory and other files to be backed up. Yet this never really happens. Every time I reboot I lose my settings.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you trying to save them to a usb stick or hdd? I presume you are booting with a permanent /home and/or /opt directory & specifying (sp?) where they are located in your LILO or Grub menu file? If you aren't you'll have to add them to the relevant file. I use Grub so I just edited the menu.lst in /boot on hda1. Is this a frugal install or hdd?

Little more information please.

This is a frugal install on a 2 GB drive. I have two partitions, each is 1 GB. hda1 is where the KNOPPIX, boot, and lost+found live. hda1 is also where I manually put the downloaded extensions so they will automatically reload when I boot. This part seems to work fine so far.

There is nothing in hda2.

I haven't done anything to GRUB. I don't even know how to adjust GRUB.

What I would like to do is configure my system so that my home directory is actually backed up when I shutdown/reboot so I don't have to reset my X configuration, firefox settings, etc every single time.

I should clarify that I don't want a permanent /opt or /home. My 2 GB drive is actually a 2 GB CF card in an IDE adapter. I only want to write to the drive when the machine goes down for reboot/shutdown. I want everything else to take place in the ramdisk.

You will need to tell DSL to backup your files....it's disabled initially. Open the menu and go to System -> Backup/Restore, then enter sda2 or whatever your desired partition is. After doing this once, it should automatically back up each time you shutdown. If the backup is created but not restored when you reboot, you may have to add "restore=sda2" to your bootloader's kernel line.
