So what I want to accomplish is to set up several older laptops (PII-233 style) running a bare-bones version of linux. That's where DSL comes in.
What I need is a media player, a web interface, and ability to control the PC from an IR remonte control. (for music serving I have SlimServer currently running, which only requires a web interface to initiate the streaming of mp3s to that location)

This PC (laptop) will be modified so that the screen becomes wall mounted, and the guts are hanging behind the wall, and the idea is  that with a few of these spread around the house, I can control music at each location.

I know that DSL is likely a good candidate, but other then that, I don't really know where to start. Any recommended apps I should consider?
I don't even know where to start a search so I can help myself.

Any thoughts would be helpfull.

For a media player, I would recommend mplayer (I think it supports remote controls as well)
What do you mean by web interface? A httpd? If that's right, you can try monkey web server in base DSL or grab Apache.

Clarification is reuired:
SlimServer is an audio server software that streams mp3s to client locations. The PC I want to set up will be a client. The server's interface is accessed through http.
In terms of audio player, I only need something that will accept a mp3 stream (that gets sent out by the server).
All other audio controls (like play, pause, solg selection) are taken care of by the SlimServer (on the server)

In reality I don't even need a window manager running, since all I will ne using is one screen (which is a web browser pointed to the http address of the music server), and a media player that can run without an interface (even aplay would work I think)

You could try mpg123/ogg123 - I believe these support audio streams.
