I am using dsl-2.4 and I needed a 2.4.31 kernel source. So I downloaded the source from kernel.org, and compiled it. I had gcc1.dsl, gnu-utils.dsl, gtk2-0705.dsl, linux-kernel-headers.dsl installed. It came out to be fine. Did you have all the modules installed before you compile the kernel?
