not sure where this goes
I have a cd/dvd/writer combo
I used the cd to install dsl to a usb pen
I then booted the pen and used the cd to copy files and music to a dir on the pen
I installed mplayer and it played a dvd
but now I can not access files on a cd
can not seem to solve
all works fine otherwise
can I get back the cd and not lose the dvd
any help appreciated..can I provide any further info?

It could be (just guessing) a problem with mplayer.  I've noticed a few annoying problems with mplayer in general, and not just in DSL. It might also be related to other software as well, but sometimes mplayer will fail at some point but continue trying to read the disk.  Even after closing mplayer, the system continues to try reading the disk and i either have to manually kill a pile of processes or reboot.  DVD playing is the most troublesome problem I've experienced in Linux, but at this point I don't know if its caused by mplayer, poor drivers, poor hardware, poor disks, some other software, or a combination of one or more of these. In any case, I've had seemingly random troubles with DVDs on several distros, and it is the number 1 source of my reboots.

Yeah i know...this doesn't help....

Thanks mikshaw....it helps to know I am not the only one who has lost cd to dvd...
I did try a reboot but it does not clear the issue...
the system is working very well otherwise and it would not matter except that I wanted to finish copying some files that I had put on hold not realizing the issue existed..and makes the cd ripper useless
What proccesses might I seek to kill and maby how..if you can think of any offhand
in any case thanks for the response:)

adding..Hmmm..not sure what I did last night but today I can copy data from cd and watch dvd and rip cd...so I'm a happy camper at the moment...
..can not play a commercial music cd, used the menu item xmms play cd..amoung other possibilities... but since I can rip the tracks I like off one, it does not matter really...
