I have spent all day messing around with this and I could just cry with frustration. I cannot seem to find the answers to the simplest questions about DSL and have had no response to my previous post

Anyway, I went ahead and started with the DSL live cd and it is all up and running on my laptop. But this is where I am stuck - I have no idea how any of this works. My main aim is to get my wifi (pcmcia netgear wg511) card working. I have got as far as loading the windows drivers onto my usb drive and putting this in the back of the laptop but now what? How do I 'find' my usb drive so I can copy the drivers across and how do I copy the drivers across when I have found them.
Please help somebody, even if it is only with a link to somewhere else I can get help. I would hate to have to give in to Microsoft.

If you have the drivers on USB plug it in and click on the file cabinet icon (emelfm) and one side should be /home/dsl and the other side you pick the directory by double clicking a directory then you may have to right click and mount for /mnt/sda1 or sd-something to get your USB. Mounting is a little different from Windows but all you do is go to the /mnt directory and right click on what you need to mount. Highlight your drivers and hit that copy button. You should see them on the other side in /home/dsl.

Anyway I had a different wireless card and I used ndiswrapper. After you have the drivers in the home/dsl directory, open the control panel and click on ndiswrapper. Type in the path and driver name. Hopefully it will start working.

I am new at this too so my advice might not be the best and don't be afraid to search this forum or the Wiki for your wg511 wireless card. Don't give in to the dark side!

Hi.
Thanks for the reply. I have now 'found' my usb drive but when I try to access it it says it is write protected!! Grrrrr. How can this be? I can put it in any other computer and it ceratinly isn't write protected.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have never had that problem with a USB but I did see someone else did on the forum:

You can do emelfm as root by right clicking on the icon and selecting it. As root you might be able to mount it.
