This problem is simple:
I've finally got DSL set-up how I want, added very little to it really besides XAMPP for Linux and the driver needed to get my wireless card working. In addition to that I switched on the SSH client (the version of XAMPP I installed doesn't come with one) and BetaFTP (switched off XAMPP's FTP client).
I get all going, besides the fact that it insists on NOT finding my wireless card despite it being set-up in every file etc. it works okay, I just need to enter in the command to switch it on and choose it as my network device every time I start-up. That's fine, it's only a test-server and it should be rare that I ever need to restart it.
So it's running fine, serving web-pages, SSH connections are happy, and the FTP connection is great. Everything running smoothly.
One hour later and none of it's responding, I can't get the site to load on my main machine, SSH says host is down, FTP times out. I plug my second monitor back into the DSL machine and get...a black screen. Nothing, my wireless card's lights have gone off, and absolutely nothing is happening. I'm forced to reboot.
Why?! There is absolutely nothing anywhere that gives any indication as to the remotest possibility of what might have happened, it's not even like the DSL desktop appeared for me to see where it froze and what the CPU load etc was at the time. It's just dead, despite the machine being perfectly happy. And it's scheduled fun for the hour amounted to absolutely diddly squat, that's right, I didn't do anything. Over the hour I didn't SSH into it, I didn't view any web-pages, I didn't do any FTP. I just left it sitting there thinking that a computer could be left for an hour without trouble.
So how do I find out what happened? Where do I even begin trying to fix this, and why in the hell did I think for the slightest second that doing what should be simple things on a fairly simple OS would be a straight forward thing for me to do on a day that's been as bad as today?
