I've been booting DSL from the CD-ROM but today, for no obvious reason, the boot stopped just a few lines after the /ramdrive (size=95blah) stuff. I hit the reset button to start over and since then I haven't been able to use my CD-ROM. Not even in Windows. It makes a few sounds like its looking for something then ejects the disk - no matter what disk. Any ideas how to bring my CD-ROM back from the dead?

Thanks

So, you use your CD-Rom in both Windows and DSL, but for some reason, it is DSL that killed it? It sounds like you have a dead/dying CD-ROM drive. Optical drives like CD-ROMs are the most sensitive, most likely parts of a computer to die.

If it's still under warranty, you might want to get a new one from the manufacturer. Or buy a new one.

If you're interested in fixing your CD-ROM, I have a few non-expert suggestions. Use at own risk. Disconnect it, pick it up, and spank it a couple of times. Not too hard, but not too soft either. Reconnect. Did that work? Or, you could replace the IDE-cable, or just disconnect and reconnect, aka, re-seat the cable you already have.

Most likely, your CD-ROM is dead, and will never be recovered. Sorry.
