Hi, this is probably a silly question, but it is safe to do a settings  backup to a  hard drive partition with existing files? I have an old machine with a fat32 partition with many files I don't want to lose. The same goes for the home persistence. BTW, sorry for the bad english.

Your personal settings, if saved using the DSL backup/restore system, are saved into a single backup.tar.gz file, so they will not overwrite anything other than an existing file named backup.tar.gz, and will not partition or format any drive.

home persistence works only with a directory named home/dsl, so you'll need a directory named "home" which contains a subdirectory named "dsl".  This is not a good idea on a fat32 partition, however, since this type of filesystem does not properly handle linux file permissions.
