I don't think it is compiled into the kernel. The file you want to modify is /boot/isolinux/logo.16 . This image is in lss16 format. The tool you use to modify this image is ppmtolss16. This comes with Knoppix. It is also included with the syslinux source tarball. It is a perl script, so no compiling necessary.
I've never done this before, but I looked it up on the net. Here is the Knoppix page that mentions this: [uri=http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7]HOWTO: change the boot logo/screen[/uri]. Keep in mind that DSL is somewhat different than Knoppix. For one, ppmtolss16 is not included with DSL. Also, the location of logo.16 is where I said it was for DSL, but somewhere else for Knoppix.
