Knoppix is a regular for windows rescue, but the compactness and speed of DSL is attractive.

For basic rescue / backup of files from a windows system, can DSL be used instead ? An important issue is not to put the files at risk, but will mounting the windows partition put the files at risk of corruption?

Are there any good links to pages / topics focusing on using DSL for rescue purposes ?

Thanks.

For all my partitions backups of my computers (laptop, desktop, from my wife, from my two childrens) I make it with a DSL CD with partimage and qparted as extensions in mydsl into the CD, and make this backups into a USB-HDD from 400Gb.
Sometimes I have made a restoration from someone and goes perfectly.

If the Win partitions are in NTFS, DSL cannot write to it, which means it cannot cause corruption either.
Reading has no trouble, so file rescue should work great..

And with fat32 you can always mount it readonly (mount -o ro)
