I think that your best bet would be to wait for a Power PC version of Knoppix and apply the same type of slim-down modifications to Knoppix that John used when he first created DSL
If a Power PC version of Knoppix is not an option, another solution would be to slim down an existing Linux distro and stuff it into a compressed filesystem. You would not have that nice Knoppix autodetection feature but you would be able to create a live CD that works with a Power PC.
