On my old laptop when I use DSL from the liveCD the X gui works fine,
but when I use the loadlin method (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Loadlin_Install)
X gives only an empty screen with the error:
"XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0""
" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining."

On my other desktop computer Pentium 130 Win95 the loadlin method works fine.

Had somebody got a similar problem?
Any Ideas?
Is there a log file for the default XVesa (like the /var/log/XFree86.0.log for XFree86)
? Where is it?

Thank you for your help.

The laptop is a Compaq Armada 7770DMT Pentium 233 Win98
SPECIFICATIONS:
Pentium/233 MMX, 512Kb of pipeline-burst cache, 32Mb of EDO RAM, 3.2Gb EIDE removable hard disk, Compaq 20-speed CD-ROM drive, 2Mb S3 Aurora 64V+ graphics card, 12.1in SVGA TFT screen, 16-bit ESS 1878 audio, integrated stereo speakers and microphone, internal 33.6K modem,one Type III or two Type II PC Card slots, 4Mbits/sec infrared port, lithium ion battery. Windows 95. Dimensions: 320 x 240 x 58mm (W x D x H). Weight: 3.58kg.

I tried different versions of DSL 4.2.5, 4.4.10
I tried with different boot arguments
I also tried to use XFree86.

when booting from the liveCD the cmdline is:
ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init lang=us apm=power-off vga=791 initrd=minirt24.gz nomce noapic quiet BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix BOOT_IMAGE=linux24

with this option.txt file for loadlin (in config.sys I have : shell=c:\loadlin.exe @c:\options.txt)

linux24
ramdisk_size=100000
init=/etc/init
lang=us
apm=power-off
vga=791
initrd=minirt24.gz
nomce
noapic
nodhcp
quiet
root=/dev/hda1
rw
frugal
BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix

it is:
root=/dev/hda1 rw apm=power-off minimal ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init lang=us nousb noapic nomce nodhcp quiet frugal BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix BOOT_IMAGE=linux24

to put the missing "vga=791" I tried c:\ loadlin @c:\options.txt vga=791
but even with that it does not appear in the cmdline...
with "c:\ loadlin @c:\options.txt vga=791 2" DSL starts in runlevel 2, so it seems to take these arguments after the options.txt file...

.xserverrc is:
exec /usr/bin/X11/Xvesa -2button -mouse /dev/psaux -screen 640x480x4 -shadow -nolisten tcp -I &>/dev/null

dmesg gives:
