I am running version 0.8.4 DSL on an  old Pentium 2,  366hz, external serial port fun Modem dial up connection)

When I connect to the internet I hear the normal sounds, (the computer dials out etc) but at the last second the message from the text on the screen comes up "connect Script Failed"
and "no carrier"  and the modem doesnt connect.

What does this mean?  How can I correct it?

The no carrier error could be caused by line noise which
in turn causes your connection to fail. If the modem works ok
in your windows system or what ever OS you may be using.
Then line noise may not be the problem.

Here are some things to check for in linux.
If you are on dailup you may went to check in the pppconfig setup to see if you checked (use static DNS)
or (use dynamic DNS). The option use dynamic DNS is problaly
the one you want for dailup. Use the arrow keys to move to the option and select with the space bar.

Also you might want to check in the /etc/ppp/provider file
and lower the speed of your modem.
Also make sure you  point your moden to the port its on in the same file. And do the same in the file you gave a name for in the pppconfig setup.

Also you could play around with the mru and the mtu setting
in the options file /etc/ppp/options. For dailup mru 512
mtu 576 is about right.
