It could be (just guessing) a problem with mplayer. I've noticed a few annoying problems with mplayer in general, and not just in DSL. It might also be related to other software as well, but sometimes mplayer will fail at some point but continue trying to read the disk. Even after closing mplayer, the system continues to try reading the disk and i either have to manually kill a pile of processes or reboot. DVD playing is the most troublesome problem I've experienced in Linux, but at this point I don't know if its caused by mplayer, poor drivers, poor hardware, poor disks, some other software, or a combination of one or more of these. In any case, I've had seemingly random troubles with DVDs on several distros, and it is the number 1 source of my reboots.
Yeah i know...this doesn't help....
