Will files outside of the DSL repiratory work with DSL?

Yes, but there are no guarantees.

Many of the myDSL extensions were actually created from foreign file sources like slackware or hand-compiled binaries.  So it is possible to do so but you need to know what you are doing.

Of course the nice thing about running DSL from a livecd is that if you mess things up all you need to do is reboot your computer and reload the livecd and you are back in business.

I'm glad you said that about the livecd thing.  I had almost forgotten, and I've crashed my hard drive 5 times today already.  I don't think I'll try that again.  Now I have to figure out how to put the files on a liveCD, hopefully that's easier than the other problems i've encountered.
