OK, dumb it is.

It turns out that although my ISO image was OK, the CD I burned could not boot. (I could read all the files, but it wasn't bootable.) Now that I have burned a good bootable CD, and turned off Mandriva bootability, I can boot to DSL.

Onward to Step 1.0001.
