Hi all,

I'm new to the DSL/Knoppix/etc bootable linux environment, but I've got a server that has crashed (due to an intrusion :/) and it will not get through the normal boot process (Red Hat 9).

So to at least get some data off the drives before a format, I've burned DSL 0.9.3 and my box started to boot from it just fine, When it got to what i guess is a splash screen with DSL and the penguin on it, well.. only the top half of that screen shows, and everything just freezes there.

I have a SCSI/RAID configuration going, so I dont know if it has anything to do with support for that.  Other than that there's not any strange sort of hardware installed.

Any ideas on what causes this and how to remedy it?  Thanks for your help.

Adaptec RAID SCSI controllers can be a problem in Linux distros like Debian, KNOPPIX and DSL.

While open source drivers exist for some controllers, Adaptec sometimes will provide only a closed-source binary driver that will work with a specific linux kernel version and nothing else.

Because these drivers are not published under an open source free distribution license like the GPL, they are not included by default in these distros.

It may be possible that an open source RAID driver will work with your card.  Try a google search on your card model and KNOPPIX

Why? DSL is based on KNOPPIX version 3.4 5-17-2004 so if it works on KNOPPIX then it can probably be made to work on DSL.

Unfortunately, your more likely solution will be to use a Red Hat rescue disk with a custom RAID driver loaded from a floppy disk.

Good Luck.
