HOWTO make a system backup with partimage.

Assumption:

One that you have access to Internet and know how to download files.

Two have a hard drive to store images, I use a partition that is not bootable.

Three your system can boot from cdrom or pen drive, or even hard drive.

Four that you can follow the following steps.

Note: You can make images of Linux partitions or even a Windows, Fat16 or Fat32
partition for a complete system backup in my case when I play around
with DSL. Today I even made back up images of my pen drive (so just in case I lost it).

1.Log on to the Internet and go to "http://www.partimage.org/"

2.Go to the download page

3.Find the following file and download:

partimage-0.6.4-static.tar.bz2

(remember where you store it).

4.copy to hard drive where you will store images.

5.Using Emelfm, highlight and then right click and choose action then unpack.

Note: make sure to unmount drives that you want to make images of.....
leaving only the image drive mounted.....

6.Start a XTerminal session.

7.Type at the command prompt #
sudo su

change to where you have just extract partimage...
I also put a copy of both files (partimage and partimaged) in my /optional sub directory just in case.

8.Type at the command prompt #
./partimage

9.Using the down arrow key highlight the partition to make an image of.

10.Using the tap key to next field enter: pendrive1210305
Note you can enter what you want, to identify what the file is, in this case it is pen drive partition1 ddmmyy format the program will append .000

11.Then press the (F5) key. to continue.

12.Using the down arrow key to change image split mode to automatic press the space bar to make change.

13.Then press the (F5) key to continue.

14.Enter a description when requested like "pen drive partition 1 as of 03/21/05 at 11:00 am" or what you like without the quotes.

15.Press the tab key then enter key and then again as needed.

I also make it one file not in pieces or no compression for faster backup.

16.Partimage does it process, depending on device and partition size it will do its thing.

Repeat process for each drive to make an image of.
I do all bootable drives once a week so that I am current to that point.
I have tested on the latest version see below...
I have tested this on 15GB size partitions and 256mb too.
I have restored os's both linux and windows.

That it folks. J
__
The box said, "Requires Windows ME or better", So I booted DSL-1.0rc1 on cdrom or DSL-embedded-1.0rc1 on Pen drive....
