I've been poking around the forums the last couple days, and haven't seen anything that fits my problem.
I'm running dsl 0.9.3 cd on an old 150mhz laptop.  The hd is fat32 with win98 on it.
My problem is, even tho mc shows it as being readonly for all but root, it says I don't have permissions to read files on the hd.  If I sudo su in termial, then it will let me in to the hd.  But if I try find an mp3 with xmms, or find a text file, it won't let me.  It won't let me change permissions or owner on the hd as root either (how do i not have permission when in god mode?).
It seems odd to auto mount the hd, then keep me out of it, even tho looks like I should be able to read what is there without being root.

Permissions on mounts are set during the mount process, and apparently can also be affected by the permissions set on the mountpoint itself.

This might help:

1) umount the drive
2) check permissions on the mountpoint...should be readable by group and/or others (at least "755").
3) edit the options of this mount in /etc/fstab, adding "gid=50,umask=002" (gid being whatever group you want to give permission, and umask being the permissions).  You can also add "rw" to make it writeable, and "users" to allow regular users to mount/umount
4) remount
