I haven't done it either, except in a distro which already had a bootsplash installed by default.
There are no sources in DSL...not none nowhere. However, there is a kernel source DSL extension available (click on the "repository" link on the main damnsmalllinux.org page). I don't know if the kernel supports it, but this may get you going.
EDIT: Unless John rebuilt the kernel for DSL, it should have support for bootsplash. It would need the splash package (maybe one from Knoppix will work), and you might need to change the initrd (don't ask me...i dunno how). All I know for sure is that I saw mention of a splash boot option, and /etc/init.d/splash.sh script
