OK, I'm a newbie, and the answer is probably as obvious as can be, but I'm also old, so the learning curve is not so great either. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. What I want to do is when booting DSL from a LiveCD, and I get to the first boot prompt, I want the command "dsl toram mydsl=hda1" put in there automatically. I've tried putting that command into the bootlocal.sh file, but get an error message. I also get the message when booting "You have passed an undefined mode number". I would like to know where and what to add to get rid of that as well. Again, all hellp will be greatly appreciated.

It appears you're ready to experience the mkmydsl script. This script is in the Tools menu and allows you to make your own custom DSL cd. You can make a cd that contains your mydsl files and also can have your own custom boot parameters. If you make a mydsl cd then you will only need the boot parameters

Code Sample

toram vga=normal

to fix your boot problems. You won't need the 'mydsl=hda1' because those files will be on the cd and loaded automatically.

Search the forum and the wiki for details and ask any other questions you need.

If you want to change the default boot options in a liveCD you'll need to either edit the boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg file on the CD, or else write a script in a persistent bootlocal to do what you need. The first option is much easier....it requires only editing the default append line and recreating the ISO. The second option may easily break things if you don't know exactly what you're doing.

The undefined mode number is related to X configuration of the monitor. First thing I'd try is running xsetup to tweak your settings.

OK, I've tried running the mydsl script under Tools, and although it runs and creates an iso file on the HD, during the process I get the error message "Operation failed. Failed to retain ownership of" then the file name. I burned a disk using the iso file, and it seems to contain everything, but it won't boot. The boot line options I want put in automatically are: "dsl toram dsl vga=normal". Part of the problem is that I have (until VERY recently) been away from computers for over ten years, and am totally unfailiar with ISO files, burning CDs, etc., so I'm unfailiar with a lot of the terminology as well. I don't mind trying things on my own to learn, but it may take someone here taking me by the hand and walking me though this, or drawing me a very detailed picture, or something. Again, any and all help will be greatly appreciated from an old newbie.

if you are only using the one computer, you can make things much simpler. do a hd frugal install ;

Other options are to boot from floppy (or hard disk) to load
the knoppix image from a dos-partition on a hard disk.

p.s/i would rather help anyone who had any experience with pre-decade computers than fresh youngsters who claim they know about iso files anyday.
