It is my understanding that "base" is an option
for stopping the searches and installs of extensions,
and for not adding the mydsl files and dirs.

( /optional, adding optional extensions to menus, etc..
..loading up extensions at boottime from the root )

It may do even more..

I created the base option for those who had made a cd using mkmydsl with mydsl extensions in the root. But then if they went to another machine with not enough memory, or of significantly different, they could still use their custom cd and boot to a  base DSL system.
