Second one is easy, provided you can at least boot to DOS mode with CD access. You can use the instructions on Loadlin Install, without actually copying the DSL CD contents on the hard disk. This is because the autodetection procedure of KNOPPIX scans all devices for the presence of the folder /KNOPPIX. But you have to have the contents of /boot/isolinux folder and the file options.txt to where the loadlin is so that loadlin can find them easily.
As for the first one, if the BIOS is shot then do the following steps: First, cry/curse your heart out. Second, consult the manuals of the board to see if there are dip switches that you can set to allow for bare necessities (usually at least detect the floppy drive). If none, loop to the first step or stop. If yes, go to next step. Third, obtain the latest BIOS firmware and follow the procedures for uploading it using the floppy drive. Fourth, enter the BIOS setup to set or autodetect the other drives. Then, depending on which drives you are able to access, boot DSL accordingly.
