I'm on dial-up also and there is no way that I would be happy with being disconnected. The strategy I use for keeping abreast of new releases of my favorite live-distro "DSL" is to use the hi-speed net connection at my local library.
I can d'load anywhere from 200-300 MB in the hour that is allocated to users there. So you could possibly grab the latest .iso and your favorite .ext's while there.
Check out your local library it may be a good "net resource" for you. Also go prepared with some media to write to-CDR's,USB "pendrive",etc. You'll have to check out your libraries policy on downloading and saving data.
