'Kay, so I did this:

http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....;t=4734

after checking my CD on a modern computer to make sure I burned it okay.

What I get is the following error message:

"Can't find knoppix filesystem, sorry. Dropping you to a (very limited) shell. Press reset button to quit."

Thank you so much for any and all links, suggestions, and advice. This PC is my own, but it is quite similar to the hardware I work on for folks in my hometown whose options in life are severely truncated because they can't afford the Micro$oft™ paradigm.

It currently runs Win95 OSR1 and Netscape 4.8 okay but not much else.

Sorry,  I don't do windows.
