firstly, I Know this is a fairly common question, and i've tried all the usual things (google, searched this forum, etc) with no luck. i'm a moderator on another forum, so i appreciate how annoying this can seem, and i'll delete the thread if it's obvious i'm just being thick. anyway...
I want a remote desktop solution and settled on VNC because it's crossplatform (is this the right assumtiiion on my part?) but i need the server, rather than the client
I want to install the VNC server so that i can control my DSL box from another machine (winXP). i've already had some fun autostarting monkey and the myDSL system is FANTASTIC, (samba worked at a click - ace!), but that's at the limits of what i know at the moment. i've downloaded the vnc server 'tar.gz' tarball. the question is now what do i do with it? I've never compiled source. i know i can use an app in dsl that takes the tarball and creates/installs the software from it (i think) but what's it called? where do i find it? how do i use it?
I'd appreciate an answer that explains what each stage is about and would help me not just install VNC, but tells me enough so i don't have to come back here with a noob question again if i want to install other software. weblinks are fine of course
thank you for your time, all help is really appreciated, again really sorry if i'm just being thick
matty
PS why didn't i try the bootcampFAQ? i did but it digresses a lot (lots of questions, few answers - not a complaint, just an observation. i'm willing to help when i've got something to offer) and doesn't cover the basics at the level of simplicity i need.
