I'm going to be keeping DSL installed to my laptop HD as a permanent OS, so right now I am trying to download some files I've noticed didnt come with the standard DSL distribution.  

Two things i am working on is getting the make script in there, and also installing GCC, which is where I am having problems.  I  read through the GCC documentation, and through a couple linux books from my local library, and its making my head spin! So my questions are:

Does GCC actually compile on DSL?
And, can anyone give me some pointers on doing it?

There are many benefits to keeping it frugally installed or running from liveCD.
Do understand that there are new DSL releases every 3-4 weeks.
That is a lot of HDinstalls in a year if you want to keep up with the latest DSL.

As far as gcc goes, there are two ways...

1. grab the gcc1.dsl and the kernelsources.dsl files from the repository and install them.  
( as you would any other extensions )

2. Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file . change the "stable" to "unstable"
   Then run     apt-get update
                     apt-get install gcc g++ make

Search the forums for keywords 'gcc' or 'make' for more info.

There is also 'tcc' , a small but efficient compiler, in DSL
