so far that is the only way i can get DSL to work, but i want to be able to use the GUI and see pictures, listen to music and everything. can someone help me out?

Try typing "xsetup.sh" from the command line.  This will let you create your XWindows settings.

Then type "startx" from the command line to launch the gui environment.
