I really like DSL, but I don’t know how to configure it. I have been trying to set it up for a couple of months with no success. Most every other program I use come with a basic tutorial, I can’t find a tutorial anywhere. I have searched using Google and have found tons of info on Linux, but nothing for setting up DSL. Linux is a mystery to me, because I am mainly a Windows point and click user. As a last resort I decided to post my questions at this forum, because I think DSL is so cool I don’t want to give up! I bought the CD (version 0.7.1) because it is my favorite distro. I like Knoppix as far as saving settings, but I like DSL because it works much faster on my setup than Knoppix.

I have managed to learn how to configure the modem. I still need to no how to save my configuration so I won’t have to set up the modem every time I boot DSL.

I have several questions about DSL, if someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

How do I save my configuration? I have tried saving to hda1 by means of the DSL control panel with no luck. I have read that I am supposed to create a separate directory in order to save Firefox. How is this done?  Where do I create the directory, on hda1, or do I somehow add it to an open session CD?

I’ve read also that in order to save my modem settings that I need to add something to the filetool.lst. Ok, I don’t know how to do this and in what order, could someone help, or is there a tutorial on DSL somewhere that I’ve missed?

How do I enable sound? I have a pretty good soundcard that I use for recording music. It is a Midiman Delta 44. It works fine in Knoppix, but not in DSL. It is identified as Ice1712. I’m not sure if that is the driver or that is the soundcard.

I know these are very basic questions, but I can’t find the answers anywhere. I think it would be great idea if the creator of DSL would create a tutorial CD. If one was available, I would definitely be interested in buying it. And it would probably make DSL more accessible to Linux beginners like myself.

Thanks

Ok , no problem, and welcome to DSL.. thanks for your support..
You having a 0.7.1 version is good, as there is lots of stuff you can do with it...

First things first, a little more info from you would be very helpful.

Backups...
How is your hda1 formatted/partitioned ( fat32?, ntfs?, ext2 or 3?)
What is on your hda1? ( windows 95/98/me/2k/xp,  dos, another linux distro?)
DSL will not write to an NTFS partition. commonly used in
W2K, XP, etc..  you'll need a partition that is writable to backup to for starters..

Firefox...
Your cache, passwords, bookmarks, etc already go into a
folder under /home/damnsmall called '.phoenix' ( dot phoenix )
That is the one you'll need to backup/restore to keep your stuff.

Midiman...
I also have the 66 and 1010 , which also uses the ice1712 module.
It's unfortunate that this card is not supported by this kernel.
Soon to come, I hope... Perhaps a kernel guru would build a
working kernel for us delta soundcard users? hint hint.... :-)
( and yes, knoppix finds it just fine )

Filetool.lst...
A copy of this file exists in your /home/damnsmall directory
Use this file ONLY as your template, and as such, edit ONLY
a copy of this file to your liking..  When you decide on a location
for your backups, (lets assume a fat32 partition as your second partition on your first hard drive)
you need to place this COPY on that partition.
When editing your filetool.lst COPY, add lines to it like...
/home/damnsmall/.phoenix
/home/damnsmall/.fluxbox/backgrounds
/home/damnsmall/.fluxbox/themes
and whatever else you'd like to keep, such as your modem config.
(the folders that start with the 'dot' are hidden folders..)
(you can see them in emelfm by clicking on the 'H' near the top)

Use the menu from the desktop, (right click)
goto system, and select file restoration,
then use the choice asking for location of your backup area.
Enter the partition only, for example  " hda2 "
Then select file-restoration thru the menu again, and select backup...
now all of your choices in the filetool.lst COPY are in your backup area.
Restore it next bootup by using ' dsl restore=/dev/hda2 '
or whatever is appropriate for your HD,
Or, wait for the desktop and use the menu>file-restoration>restore choice.

I looked at the properties of hda1 (is that drive C in Windows?) it reads, File system: FAT32 is that what you were asking? My OS is Windows 98se.

I have used Knoppix in the past and have been saving  configurations, like modem settings and bookmarks. Would that cause problems with DSL?

What lines would you add to filetool.lst to save the modem config?

Thanks alot for your reply!
