ok i know in this modern day and age that a good majority of us have winmodems, and this poses as a huge problem since linux doesnt natively support it (that i know of), but i have found a decent set of drivers for linmodems (linux version of win modems) that are excellent at http://www.linmodems.org/, now i want to download and copy them onto my cd.  after i burn i want to untar them and install them... or is it possible to put them on the cd and have dsl automatically find the hardware?

I wouldnt be going through all this trouble except i want to learn.. and well its the only type of internet we have in the area

also i am still fairly new to linux command line, and the whole admin thing so what exactly are the steps required to install a driver?

Sobie

Copying the files & installing on the cd is gonna be a real problem as you will also need the compiling tools, GCC, make etc:
In the case of Lucent or HCF modems you will need the kernel headers too, I think it would be better to do a hard drive install and compile the drivers ( tho I think the modems have to be installed ) then burn a new cd.

There are thousands of Winmodems being used in Linux and it's unfortunate that the users get so little support.
As far as I know Kurumin is the only one to include drivers on the cd, I've been told the problem is licensing issues but Carlos does'nt seem to have a problem with it.

Winmodems are a real pita but for a lot of us it's the only way we have to connect.

2 solutions: find precompiles... and yes they very well do exist... took me 5 mins to find one for my pctel modem...

#2 cross compile if you know what you are doing its not that hard...
