I searched the forum but only few things came and they weren't entirely about this subject.
I also read the thing that comes up once DSL starts, kind of like small guide, and that talked about saving, but I understood probably 30% of it.

So I came here then.

this is the latest version btw...
Clicking on DSLpanel and then on Backup/Restore and then entering the device I want this to be saved on is useless I think.

I got few partitions, floppy drive etc. but it doesn't save on any of these. Either it's broken or I don't know how to do it (its probably the last one).

One more question..
saving a text file is also unsuccessful. For ex. I try to save test using FLwriter on hda6 (or anything that has "hd") I get error message "Cannot open file..." I'm not trying to open it...but save it...

It saves great on floppy disk...
any ideas?

Make sure when you backup you input just the name of the partition "hda2" not "/dev/hda2" The files that will be saved are listed in the hidden file .filetool.lst This file can specify both individual files and whole directories (and their subdirectories) to be "backed up". If there were individual files or sub-subdirectories in the .filetool.lst that you *did not* want to be backed up, then specifiy those in .xfiletool.lst The default .filetool.lst should work for most people just getting started.h

After you back up, use emelfm to go to the partition you specified. In the root you should see backup.tar.gz. This is the backup file.

When DSL starts it automatically scans all partitions and looks for this file (unless you use the boot option "dsl norestore"), when it finds it, it restores all the files from it.

Of course you can use the DSLPanel to manually backup and restore. You might try this. Create a little text file in /home/dsl with beaver, then do a backup. Then delete the file. Then do a restore and you should see it again.

tried but no go.
Here is the exact stuff that I have.

I've got: (in that meter/system tool on the right)
hda1
hda5
hda6
hda7
floppy
cdrom
and I think you can turn them on or off by clicking that little icon..when it's green, it's on (?).

So i "turn on" the hda1, then go to DSLpanel> Backup/Restore option> write in "hda1" and click on "Backup".

Then go to emelFM program:
In emelFM program there is all sort of folders:

the one that I click on is mnt/
inside mnt/ I have following:

I click on "hda1" (since I "saved" onto it), I see bunch of other files but no file that you specified. I think that it might be maybe hidden so I restart and see if it's gonna return to my previous state, but no.

I have not played with .filetool.Ist or similiar.

I'm sure it's me..but just can't figure out what exactly.

I hv installed on DSL on HDD using 'Install to hard drive" Frugal/GRUB won't do it as it says I need my Hd partition to be known as hda1 but it is hdc2 hdc5 created using cfdisk...but It is not mount ing or saving files...It opns HDC1 i.e NTFS and hdc4 FAT32 but does not show on which partion this DSL HDD install has happend??? I want to know tht...In backup/restore any partition I choose t just goes off....
hdc1 =NTFS
hdc2=Linux
hdc4=WIN95 FAT32 LBA
hdc5=Linux swap....

So Can anybody help me how this ...Mountning to HDC2 issue need to be addressed....

I want to dual boot to XP and Linux so I need detailed procedure according to this installation and not GRUB or Lilo...

Why this partition is havin problems...in accesseing..
