I have found and downloaded all of the appopriate drivers for my usb hardware.
Now as far as I can decipher once I have them unpacked I need to do something called
1.make
2. I need to place them somewhere in /dev
3. they should magically work. Correct?

Open emelfm and browse to your tar.gz file.  Right click on it and "choose action" --> "unpack."  This should make a new folder.  Open the folder and view the README or INSTALL file.  These files should tell you everything you need to do to install the drivers.  Normally you need to do a "./configure" before a "make."  The configure will look around your computer and see how it is setup and if you have all of the stuff you need to compile the drivers.  Hope this helps.
