With the hardware i use I'm forced to first copy the whole CD image to a separate partition (hda6, FAT16 of 70mb) on the harddisk.

Rest of drive settings are
hda1: around 650mb ext2 and set to bootable
hda5: 32mb swapspace. This one will be merged with hda6 when the install completes to make a total of 100mb swapspace

Computer is a Dell Latitude XPi P90D laptop with 16MB ram. When letting it boot from the bootfloppy, it will continue to use the hda6 files as soon as these are found, and the thing actually works (when you are patient enough to wait for it to boot, which takes 15 minutes or so) in 800x600x16bit SVGA.

When i run 'install' mode from the menu, the installation runs, formats hda1 as requested and copies the files.
When it's time for the bootloader, i tell it to install the bootloader. At that point there is some disk activity, and it directly jumps back to the command prompt whitout any further questions (haven't seen the grub/lilo question after i first did run the install routine)

The disk had a LILO bootsector placed in the first install, but then the root files were missing. (and the instructions in the wiki mention a file that no longer exists)
All later tries ended up in jump to prompt behaviour...

This might help...

1. Remove the HDD

2. Put HDD to an enclosure to make it an external HDD.

3. Boot DSL Live CD

4. Install DSL on USB-HDD
(Apps>Tools>Install to USB Pendrive>USB-ZIP)

5. Follow the installation process.

6. After all is done, remove externall HDD and put it back to the HDD.

It worked for me after doing a direct HDD install to my Thinkpad 570 laptopthat has NO optical and floppy drive plus uncapable of booting to its USB drive.

Hope it helped.
