Again, as a warning, I'm new -- I could be completely and utterly wrong.
But, here's what I'd do:
1) If it is the actual Yahoo IM client, you could always just delete it and redownload it from the web. If, as you say, this is one that came with DSL -- it's probably got a name different than merely "Yahoo IM". Find out what it is, and redownload from there.
2) If it isn't, you could merely use Gaim or a host of other IM applications that work just like they were your particular IM client. This is what I'd do, anyway...
3) Have you made any adjustments to particular files or changed anything in the settings, lately? Perhaps something got changed that makes it work improperly. Granted, this could take a damned long time to find -- I might just consider getting a different program/redownloading the current one.
