The jre is a Java language runtime environment. It does do anything neither would loading other langauges available in the repository. What is your need or how are you planning to use Java?

When you click it in EmelFM look at the bottom or EmelFM in the little terminal window. You will see if it loads successfuly or not. If it says something like "jre_1.0_5.uci successfully mounted" then you are in business. It's loaded in memory and ready to go when you open a java applet in a browser that needs it. A good test are the NOAA satellite weather map loops.
