Then something is very wrong...

Could you describe in detail what you did at the beginning (i.e. starting from what you downloaded) to get to this point with DSL?

Also, do other operating systems work as expected on this system?

To run firefox from the menu Right Click go to Net then Browsers and select Firefox.

To display icons Right Click go to Setup go to Desktop select Icontool
When the icontool opens the first tab has a selection for Display Icons.

Ok,step by step

I've created a txt document with
5dc742bee16b290e841b7837201695fd dsl-3.0.1.iso and saved on the desktop(same location of the downloaded iso).
I've used a program...MD5CheckSum ( www.md5summer.org ) to verify,clicked on "verify sums" button. Next,it shows a dialog box without any error.

My Windows XP is working properly..but anyway..Now,using Nero Express ,"what would you like to burn?" I choose "disk image or saved project". Everything works fine.
I reboot my system and in the DOS screen(before the Windows black and white bar),i press F8 and choose boot from the CD drive. I press enter.

A box appears:
"Damn Small Linux setup routine: choose your prefered screen resolution". I choose 800x600.
"Choose your preferred color depth". I select 32 bit.
"Choose the number of mouse buttons". i select 3 buttons.

The distro loads and shows a penguin desktop wallpaper, a taskbar, but no icons.
Right clicking on the desktop, app>net, the options are Tiny IRC,Naim, glinks, xfmail, axy ftp,vnc viewer and monkey web server. There is no Fx shortcut.

Am i doing something wrong?

Right clicking going to app->net does not sound right.

Try this

Right Click got to System->System Stats
When the window opens it should be on the cpu tab (if it is not select the cpu tab).  At the top the DSL version will be listed.  Please make sure it is the correct version.  It sounds like your version is older.

You can also try to find firefox manually.

Right Click got to Shells (or Xshells) and open a shell.  In the terminal that opens type
sudo find / -name "*irefox*"
and see where firefox is listed.  There should be one like
/usr/local/bin/firefox
try running that in the shell window.

brianw: he verified the md5, so the version he got _should_ be correct.  Maybe he just inserted an old cd.  (I thought glinks was taken out.. and there's nirc used instead of tiny irc)

maybe he should try looking in dmesg or other logs for some hints...  after verifying his version.
