Xmms should play cds without trouble.  Make sure your disk is NOT mounted, and use the command "xmms /dev/cdrom" (if /dev/cdrom is your cd device).

As far as I know, DVD movies cannot be played with any software that is included in DSL. Check the mydsl repository for xine, mplayer, maybe one or two other apps are there as well.
