That's not xdmcp, that's X forwarding; in it you don't log to the other comp's X, just log to text mode, start a X app and make it show on local X screen.

You can do that with telnet too.. But I think DSL has ssh

What exactly do you want? I'm trying to understand why you would use XDMCP to log on to another computer when there are much better, safer, more secure options. Some of those options are included with DSL (ssh).

It's too bad you couldn't get it to work with Xvesa, so try the full X extensions (Xfree 4.3 and Xorg 7.2)
