I'm new to the world of linux and up until now have been using pclinuxos.

With that OS, there was an icon on the desktop through which you could install applications such as xlock, rdesktop, the latest firefox.

Could someone advise how I could install the same applications on DSL?

DSL had such an icon too, but now it's in the menu (it's called MyDSL)

- Rdesktop is already included
- For FF, get it from mozilla.com (official) and one of the gtk2 extensions from MyDSL

I don't know if xlock is in mydsl..

Thanks for your response.

Some quick questions:

1. Is there a search function with mydsl?
2. What is gtk2 extensions
3. I'm not sure if I'm using the right wording here, but is mydsl not linked with the download sites on the net. The reason I ask is with PCLOS, once you click the download icon (called Synaptic) and then click reload, it would reload the menu of all the latest applications that could be installed.

Things such as firefox could be installed through the menus rather then going to the individual sites.

1. No search, only browsing by category. The MyDSL repository is constantly growing, but it is tiny compared to the package lists from the larger distros. Perhaps one day a search will be included, but for now it is essentially a linear process of starting with a category and viewing all packages in that category.

2. Gtk is a toolset used to build certain graphical user interfaces. DSL has Gtk1, but the newer versions of Firefox (and mydsl apps in the Gtk2 category) require the newer and heavier Gtk2.

3. MyDSL is linked with one site, which is listed in /opt/.dslrc
Each category button will grab a list of files in a subdirectory of that site

The MyDSL system has been evolving and improving over time; who knows what it will eventually become. Please keep in mind that DSL is being developed by one single person who is fixing bugs, writing and improving scripts, researching better application solutions and the user experience as a whole, and handling MyDSL.

Synaptic is available for DSL too. DSL supports Debian packages, to an extent, as well as the MyDSL packages.
