Just started ssh from menu and waited until it, ssh, started, i.e., watch cpu status. Then opened cpanel. As it should be, ssh is illuminated.

Not sure which version as your screen shoot is not showing current Lua/Fltk theme.

Note, cpanel is not a daemon and as such would not update while it, cpanel is displayed.

I did the same thing. I started ssh from the menu then logged in via putty and then opened cpanel. That's what the screen shot is showing. Regarding the version number, I'm running the current iso download 4.4.4 downloaded from: ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/

dated 8/10/2008.

What is the latest Lua/Fltk theme and where do I get it?

You must not have followed "the update" procedure, i.e, files likely in your backup, that I post whenever a new release has such changes.

Also, when reporting an issue, it must be reproducible via boot options. base norestore.

Doing such you would see the theme that has been mentioned.

I'm beginning to think I have the wrong iso version. If I follow the download link from http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ I see several download sites. The first one,  ftp://ftp.oss.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/current
looks like it has version 4.2.5 on it so I went to the second site, ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/current and used the current iso from there. I wonder if this is the wrong version. What do you think Robert?

Edit: Robert you are right about the base norestore boot option when using the iso cd. The control panel is correct under these circumstances. I'm running a USB pendrive system made from the menu tool. There is no backupfile present at the time I make the system so I'm not sure what is going wrong. I guess I'll start over and try it again.

Well I think I finally tracked down what's going on with the cpanel. The bottom line is that the installation of the mydsl gnu-utils.dsl is what appears to be breaking the cpanel process monitoring operation. I installed gnu-utils.dsl using the menu mydsl browser tool. After that cpanel no longer worked properly.

Here's a log of my steps:
Code Sample
1. booted up from cd iso no cheatcodes
2. insert usb stick
3. delete all files from sda1 and sda2
4. delete all partitions via fdisk - sda1 and sda2
5. exit reboot no backup
6. boot up from cd iso with cheatcodes dsl base norestore (usb stick still inserted)
7. check cpanel - dhcp client active
8. start shh check cpanel - dhcp and ssh active
9. stop shh check cpanel - dhcp active and ssh inactive
10. started via tool menu usb pendrive install - terminated early and closed terminal too fast too see reported problem
11. restarted fdisk /dev/sda
12 v command reports invalid partition table; d command reports no partition table defined yet
13 emelfam reports sda1 has correct files but sda2 has mostly zero byte files
14 exit reboot no backup
15 boot up from cd iso with cheatcodes dsl base norestore (usb stick still inserted)
16. restarted fdisk /dev/sda
17. v command reports invalid partition table; d command reports no partition table defined yet
18. using fdisk made two new partitions and formated using mkfs /dev/sda(1 and 2)
19. exit reboot no backup
20. boot up from cd iso with cheatcodes dsl base norestore (usb stick still inserted)
21. fdisk sda verify ok
22. unmount sda1 and 2
23. started via tool menu usb pendrive install - completed and closed window
24. emelfm shows sda1 empty and sda2 with system files present.
25. exit reboot no backup
26. boot up from cd iso with cheatcodes dsl base norestore (usb stick still inserted)
27. sda1 now shows mydsl and backup.tar.gz files
28. set backup to sda1 and acivate backup via cpanel
29. verify backup.tar.gz contents - ok
30. exit shutdown nobackup - remove cd
31. boot up from usb with cheatcodes dsl fromusb base norestore
32. check cpanel - dhcp client active
33. start shh check cpanel - dhcp and ssh active
34. stop shh check cpanel - dhcp active and ssh inactive
35. set backup to sda1 and acivate backup via cpanel
36. exit reboot with backup
37. boot up from usb with cheatcodes dsl fromusb restore=sda1
38. check cpanel - dhcp client active
39. start shh check cpanel - dhcp and ssh active
40. stop shh check cpanel - dhcp active and ssh inactive
41. create dummy text file in /home/dsl and back it up via cpanel
42. verify dummy is in backup.tar.gz - ok
43. exit reboot with backup
44. boot up from usb with cheatcodes dsl fromusb restore=sda1
45. system booted up without any background
46. check dummy file present - ok
46. check cpanel - dhcp client active
47. Installed emblem dsl background via cpanel
48. start shh check cpanel - dhcp and ssh active
49. stop shh check cpanel - dhcp active and ssh inactive
50.  exit reboot with backup
51. boot up from usb with cheatcodes dsl fromusb restore=sda1
52. background ok now
53. Use mydsl browser to install gnu utilities
54.  exit reboot with backup
55. boot up from usb with cheatcodes dsl fromusb restore=sda1
56. check cpanel - dhcp client inactive now
57. start shh check cpanel - dhcp and ssh inactive
