I network-installed OO.o from the standard .tar.gz from the OO.o site - it works beautifully, no problems at all.
Extract to /tmp
cd /tmp/OperOffice.org1.1
sudo ./setup -net
install to /usr/local/OperOffice.org1.1
as normal user in /usr/local/OperOffice.org1.1, ./setup
choose small network install option
