Mark, I think he wants to install apps to the CD itself, so they're present on a LiveCD boot.
Void, Short answer: no.
Long answer: Ya, but it takes some work. You'll still have to have useable hard drive space (a few hundred Mb). See http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/KnoppixRemasteringHowto It's not quite the same, but very similar to remaster DSL.
With John's permission, I'll whip up a DamnSmall Remastering HowTo. (when I find the time... maybe this weekend, but not positive)
