Thanks CBagger I'll give it a try. Re memory:
I do have 1GB of RAM - however I didn't oversee its installation as this is an inherited machine. I ran SiSoftware Sandra (a free diagnostic utility that generates hugely detailed reports, if you haven't seen it) some time ago and it didn't like something about the type of ram that was installed (can't find it at the moment). It also said:
Warning 2545: Large memory modules should be Registered/buffered. Tip 2546: Large memory modules should be ECC/Parity.
Could this be it?
