I downloaded a debian-static-file from newest Opera version.
I installed it with dpkg -i <operafile>.
I can start it,but there are no Fonts installed -> no text viewable and some very big windows with no content are opened...

Has anyone of you had problems like this? Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem.  It seems it was mentioned in another thread but I can't seem to find it for reference.  I do have an older version of Opera running on a laptop with DSL 0.5.3.1.  I'm hoping someone will find a solution since I would like to upgrade to a newer version of both.  It is about the only software I use on the internet.  I has restartable downloads, a good mail client, a built-in notepad, and is half to a third the size of most full function browsers.  Good luck.  I'll keep watching for an answer.

ok I found a partial answer.  It seems there is some incompatible stuff happening with the Qt fonts.  You can correct some of the problems by telling it not us use them.  After you have tried to run Opera there should be a hidden directory in your /home directory named .opera inside it is a file name opera6.ini .  If you edit in the following line under the [User Prefs] section then restart opera you should see something the next time you start opera up.

Enable Xft Fonts=0

There are still some problems with some of the dialog boxes I haven't figured out yet.  I'll keep looking.  Let me know if this works or if you discover how to correct the remaining problems.

I have now installed Opera 7.54 and DSL 8.1.1 on my laptop.  The entry in the opera6.ini file has to be done on a per user basis in each home directory.  The key to making the dialog boxes to work correctly seems to be as follows.

The first time a user runs Opera the file is created and an unreadable box appears.  Close that box.  I right click on the top frame then select close.  Edit /~/.opera/opera6.ini and add the line below under  [User Prefs].

Enable Xft Fonts=0

Run Opera again and you should see the normal license box.

Good luck.

One more option for better/cleaner install of Opera 7.54.  After installing the Opera download file and before trying to run it, edit the system wide default file as root.

     /etc/opera6rc

add the following

Enable Xft Fonts=0

It should now look like this
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

; Put any default settings here that are overridable by users

[User Prefs]
Language Files Directory=/usr/share/opera/locale/
Enable Xft Fonts=0

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Save it.

Opera should now run as normal for all users on the system.

I promise I'm done now.  Good luck.
