Ok, I got FireFox working through MyDSL, but the only way to fire it up is to right click on the desktop, click on myDSL, then FireFox.

How can I set up a desktop icon like the one for gLinks-H?

Ok.  I extrapolated from the suggestion below about removing items from the desktop and added 2 new files firefox.lnk and firefox.gif to /home/dsl/.xtdesktop.  The .gif file was originally a .png file that I got from the firefox website.  The .lnk file was a copy of links.lnk which I edited with nano to replace references to glinks with equivalent references to firefox.  I verified that typing the command firefox into an x-term window brought up the browser, but when I shut down the windows manager (even logged out) and brought it up again, the desktop was unchanged.  What do I still need to do to get an icon on the desktop with the Firefox logo which when clicked will start up firefox?

You need to backup your ./home/dsl/ xtdesktop directory, that contains the new files that you made.
In your filetool.lst, you need this line: home/dsl/.xtdesktop Then, when you restore, your files will return.
If you have made a change to the default text colors, then this file will need to be backed up also: home/dsl/xtdeskrc
---
There is another way, and I use this: change the menu, and backup/restore that. Here is the part of my menu that has Firefox:
Code Sample

Debian MENU
[begin] (Menu)
[exec] (Root Shell) {rxvt -rv -fn fixed -cr yellow  -T "Bash" -e sudo /bin/bash}
   [submenu] (Dialer) {}
          [exec] (dial) {rxvt -rv  -T "dial" -e sudo wvdial}
          [exec] (hangup) { rxvt -rv  -T "Hangup" -e sudo killall wvdial}
        [end]
[exec] (Mozilla FireFox) {/opt/firefox/firefox}
[exec] (Opera 6.03) {/usr/bin/opera}
[exec] (Sylpheed Mail) {sylpheed}

---
Then, you need to have this line in your filetool.lst: home/dsl/.fluxbox That will backup the entire directory, with your menu file in it, and also the other files, such as styles that you may use.
---
Look at the Getting Started guide link in my signature to see how I handle all that in my remaster of DSL 0.8.2, much of it applies to your situation.

The solution turned out to be -- after a bit more experimentation... to copy the foxfire.lnk and foxfire.gif files to /root/.xtdesktop.  Evidently my foxfire.gif image is a bit on the big side for an icon, but though it dominates the desktop, when I click on it, I now get foxfire running.
