No.

Put your gtk2 and gnu-utils dsl file in the same directory where your backup.tar.gz is already located.

Then reboot.

But then you'll STILL need to run the " Update to GTK2" from the menu..
This does the post-install portion of the gtk2/font/perl setup..

the "root" of a partition doesn't mean a directory named "root"....it's the very top level of the partition.  For example, the KNOPPIX & boot directories are located in the root of the booted partition.

Thanx for the "root" clarification,  I tired that and it still doesn't work (placing gtk2.dsl & gnu-utils.dsl in the root folder and the selecting them from the menu for the post-install).  I noticed in all of the text that scrolls during the boot process,  there is a message saying "invalid tar magic" following gnu-utils and the gtk2 extensions.   ???

Could you say the DSL version, and amount of RAM available?
Also, have the extensions md5summed O.K.?
Just wondering if you're in a low RAM situation, and are running out.
And, of course, if the extensions themselves have downloaded O.K...
