I'm trying to tweak my version of DSL so there are far less apps and daemons. Basically all I need to do it have sshd, X11, networking with DHCPD, and a browser, so all other functions/apps are n/a and taking up space.

Any suggestions for tweaking the system to be smaller and quicker, as well as removing applicable files/libs, etc.

"Space" usually doesn't slow down the performance.  So unless your disk is full, I would not worry about it.

For a truely minimal DSL bootup, try this:
