For several years now, I have run both my networks behind
the Freesco package.  Runs on a 386 with as little as 8 megs.
Case/P-Supply, 2 nics,  mboard/ memory, floppy drive, and your in business.
If you have PCI nics, they configure themselves.
Usually setup to run off a FLOPPY.
Needs NO HD ever, and no monitor or keyboard except when installing.
Quiet, compact, and if trouble strikes, simply REBOOT.
Remote administration and service thru webmin-type interface.
Works with dialups, DSL, isdn, etc...easy to configure
Can use up to 3 nics for in/out/DMZ for your other servers
Can use up to 2 modems for dial-IN and dial-OUT capability
Print server, time server, web server, router, firewall,
DNS caching server, DHCP server, gateway, MP3 server,

I run my system off a p100, 200mb HD, and 32 megs ram.
Screaming fast!
Leaves room for lots of stats and plugins, such as:
Logging / reporting
EDNA  - http mp3 server,
thttpd - http web server
darkstat - network traffic graphic reporting
Midnight Commander for file management
Paranoid Firewall - passes NMAP stealth scan on all ports!
Hundreds of others plugins at http://www.freescosoft.us/html/home.html

Give it a try, then go to www.grc.com and port scan your new doorstop.
Or use NMAP from another location, you'll be pleased !

A wonderful project for "Atticware"

Freesco is fine and dandy..but a bit overwhelming for Linux newbies

SmoothWall Express is an open source firewall distribution based on the GNU/Linux operating system. Linux is the ideal choice for security systems; it is well proven, secure, highly configurable and freely††† available as open source code. SmoothWall includes a hardened subset of the GNU/Linux operating system, so there is no separate OS to install. Designed for ease of use, SmoothWall is configured via a web-based GUI, and requires absolutely no knowledge of Linux to install or use.

SmoothWall is designed to be a firewall appliance only...thus it becomes a firewall/router with immense capabilties, plus you dont have to know Linux to install it...

The Smoothwall project forked... Smoothwall is still a slick little firewall with Webmin style interface, but the Open Source fork (IpCOP) is much more configurable, though neither is as quick at packet filtering as Astaro.
All are good, and show the strength of Linux in leveraging new life from old hardware.
