while running linux from a live cd is a nice way to play, it is really only good to test a distro's compatibility to your hardware. Like I said, you need to learn linux. It isn;t always possible to support every possible configuration people have. Laptops are probably the worst for total support, so you need to fix things if you don;t like em.

HDD space is cheap. learn how to setup lilo. carve out a bunch of partitions, and install. Learn how to compile things in your distro of choice, and get What you need and what you want. Don;t be fooled by the eye candy, all that is changable too.
DSL is a cool little distro as is, no one would miss a 200 meg partition from their hdd. put it on there. learn how to tweak up it's startup, so it boots faster. customize your desktop, have apps there you use and want all the time. Yes I know you can setup a permenent  folders to keep it all there, but it's still slowing things down.

Don;t limit yourself! Make linux what YOU want it to be, with the tools you want and the look that's you. (yes even use kde, clean it up, remove the bloat you don't use, and use some of the powerful tools that come with it).
